Tutorial – How to perform a fresh install of windows 8.1 on a old Mac HDD
NOTE: In many cases, when a HDD begins failing, the most cost-effective solution is to repurpose another HDD that is no longer in use. Depending on the drive’s previous home, you may need to do some tweaking to get things ready for a fresh installation to the HDD.
In this tutorial, The HDD being used contains a previous installation of OS X. This installation will be reformatted and overwritten with a clean installation of Windows v8.1
Below, you will find a step-by-step guide to performing a fresh installation of Microsoft Windows v8.1 on an old Mac HDD.
1) Insert the Windows v8.1 boot media.
2) Shut down and restart PC.
3) Follow on-screen instructions to boot from installation media.
4) Click “Install” from the windows v8.1 installation screen, but do not continue.
5) Press SHIFT-F10 to bring up CONSOLE
6) Type “diskpart”
7) Once inside diskpart type:
-> list disk (find the one you want to convert)
-> select disk 0 (select the one you want from the list)
-> clean (wait an hour or so until its done)
8) Type “diskpart” again
9) Once inside diskpart type:
-> list disk (find the one you want to convert)
-> select disk 0 (select the one you want from the list)
-> convert mbr (should take a second or two)
-> quit
10) Continue with install
If all goes well, you should now be able to install Microsoft Windows v8.1 on your old Mac HDD.
