UFC 129 in Toronto Canada!

www.SportAnnex.com This weekend was an exciting one for me! Not only did I finish up grad school on Friday but on Saturday I headed up to Toronto in Ontario Canada to watch UFC 129: St. Pierre vs Shields. The event was set to be as exciting as they come. Georges St. Pierre, perhaps the most dominant (if not exciting) fighter in the UFC was defending his title for the fifth consecutive time in his own home country of Canada. The venue was the Rogers Center (where the Toronto Blue Jays play)and it was being said that over 55,000 people would be in attendance, breaking the gate and attendance records for any mixed martial arts event in North America. This was my first UFC event and I was very excited going into it. Besides Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields fighting, MMA legends Randy Couture and Lyoto Machida were facing off as well. The atmosphere inside the Rogers Center in Toronto was a mix of excitement and enthusiasm as each new bout was announced and the fighters entered the octagon. The results were as follows: 1 Pablo Garza Yves Jabouin Submission (Flying Triangle Choke) Round: 1 4:31 2 John Makdessi Kyle Watson KO (Spinning Back Fist) Round: 3 1:27 3 Jason MacDonald Ryan Jensen Submission (Triangle Choke) Round:1 1:37 4 Ivan Menjivar Charlie Valencia TKO (Elbow and Punches) Round: 1 1:30 5 Claude Patrick Daniel Roberts Decision (Unanimous) Round: 3 5:00 6 Jake Ellenberger Sean Pierson KO (Punch) Round: 1 2:42 7 Rory MacDonald Nate Diaz Decision (Unanimous) Round: 3 5:00 8 Benson Henderson Mark Bocek Decision (Unanimous) Round:3 5:00 9 Vladimir Matyushenko Jason Brilz KO (Punches) Round 1: 0:20 10 Lyoto Machida Randy Couture KO (Front Kick) Round: 2 1:05 11 Jose Aldo Mark Hominick Decision (Unanimous) Round: 5 5:00 12 Georges St. Pierre Jake Shields Decision (Unanimous) Round: 5 5:00 Of particular note was the Machida vs Couture match in which Lyoto Machida KO'ed his opponent is an amazing jumping kick that sent one of Couture's teeth flying. George St. Pierre controlled his opponent in his usual fashion mixing his successful style up only slightly. I really don't understand the flak he's getting from some critics about him being boring; he's so good. How it his fault if no one can out wrestle him, out strike him or submit him? Yes I know he hasn't "finished" and opponent since he beat BJ Penn two years ago, but he doesn't need too; he's the best. All in all it was an exciting event that was well worth traveling too and I look forward to the next opportunity I have to see another UFC event.
