UN Targeted, Again, by Bomb, by Ambassador mo

The UN HQ building in Nigeria’s capital Abuja has been bombed by a vehicle crashing through the gates. Early reports indicate substantial casualties, at least 60-80 critically injured and/or killed. Search continues for victims and survivors in the badly damaged building. The attack is reminiscent of similar more recent targeting of the UN, particularly the UN HQ in Bagdad executed on August 19, 2003. (Bottom PHOTO). There is no claim of responsibility, but suspicion falls upon a radical Islamist group Boko Haram. (Besides a highly regressive view if Islam and education, the group has been engaged in a cycle of brutality with Nigerian authorities - extrajudicial killings by police and bombings and murder attributed to the group). There are claims that Boko Haram may be now coordinating with Al-Qaeda and the Al Shabaab. The role of Nigeria in various African Union/United Nations peacekeeping-peacemaking missions may be a motive, The United Nations has not reacted as it is still gathering information as of time of this article. We Just Received these comments from UN SG Ban Ki-moon: "Statement by the Secretary-General on attack on United Nations in Nigeria: Around 11:00 o'clock this morning, local time, the United Nations House in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, was struck by a car bomb. These buildings house 26 humanitarian and development agencies of the United Nations family. This was an assault on those who devote their lives to helping others. We condemn this terrible act, utterly. We do not yet have precise casualty figures but they are likely to be considerable. A number of people are dead; many more are wounded. Nigerian and international search and rescue teams have mobilized and are moving the wounded to hospitals and providing emergency aid. I am asking the Deputy UN Secretary-General, Ms. Asha-Rose Migiro, [to go] to Nigeria immediately and am mobilizing the UN system to respond to this emergency. She will be accompanied by the UN security chief, Under-Secretary-General Gregory Starr, and meet with Nigerian authorities upon arrival in Abuja. I am going to call President [Goodluck] Jonathan of Nigeria soon. On this very sad occasion, I extend my deepest sympathies to the victims and their families. The United Nations will undertake every possible effort to assist them during this difficult time."
