The world is full of diseases and as we progress, more seem to keep popping up. Everyone has heard of cancer, heart conditions, diabetes and such bummer diseases that make a person super-depressed. But have you ever heard of disease such as the ‘Alice in Wonderland Syndrome’ or ‘Stone Man Syndrome’? We kid you not! These are diseases that people in thisworld are actually dealing with, not at some other planet.
These rare diseases will literally make your skin crawl.
Here are a few that we found. Take a look!
1. Lilliputian – Alice in Wonderland Syndrome – We kid you not
This is a neurological condition that affects people’s perception of size and distorts other sensory aspects, such as having hallucinations. This is common in childhood and goes back to the concept of imaginary friends. In most cases people do outgrow this syndrome. In some who have abnormal electrical neural activity, this can continue into adulthood.
2. Stone Man Syndrome – 1 in 2 million people suffer from this, seriously!
It is an extremely rare genetic disease that becomes apparent in children under the age of 10. When tissue in the body is damaged, rather than repairing itself and remaining a tissue, the soft tissue regrows as a bone. The disease literally traps an individual in their own skeleton.
3. Necrotizing Fasciitis Syndrome – We know it’s a mouthful
Commonly known as the ‘flesh-eating disease’, it is a rare infection that affects the deeper layers of the skin and tissues. The bacteria that causes the infection does not actually eat the flesh but destroys the tissue it touches. The condition can be treated through surgery, but if left untreated, it can lead to death.
4. Methemoglobinemia – try saying that three times really fast – Blue skinned people and no they are not the Na’vi from Avatar
This disorder is where a person’s haemoglobin is low and they have high iron levels. The result is that the ability of red cells to release oxygen to tissues decreases. The skin turning blue is a symptom of this particular disorder.
5. Tree Man Syndrome – it’s really their skin, not a bark
It isn’t a tree bark that is growing out of a person’s skin who has this rare mutation of genes. They are warts and when they are exposed to sunlight they become aggravated and end up looking like tree bark. There are some treatments available to reduce the symptoms, but there is no cure as of yet.
6. Lymphatic Filariasis – not everyone is fat because they eat too much
Also known as elephantiasis, this disease is caused by the lymphatic vessels being blocked, which results in a person’s lower body swelling from the waist down. Over 40 million people are affected by it. There is medication available to help fight this.
7. Alien Syndrome – yes it’s real
This is real and does happen in rare cases to individuals who have suffered from traumatic brain injury or surgery. The patient feels that one of their hands is ‘possessed’, having a mind of its own. It will do things that you don’t want it to, it works completely independently from the individual. As of yet there is no cure, you just got keep that hand busy.
8. Porphyria – Vampire Syndrome
Only one in 1 million people is affected by this enzyme disease. Enzymes process sunlight into Vitamin D, which helps repair DNA that is damaged by UV rays, such as when we get sunburns. Individuals that are afflicted with this syndrome have enzymes that are not functioning properly. The best way to avoid harming your skin is to stay out of the sun, much like a vampire.
9. Progeria – Accelerated Ageing Syndrome
A very rare genetic disorder that occurs in children in the first two years, there’s a 1 in 8 million chance of having it. Symptoms are, as the name states, rapid aging. The majority live only until their mid teens or early twenties. In 2011, there were only 80 children in the world that had this. Currently there is no cure, but treatments are available that will slow the process down.
10. Human Werewolf Syndrome – shaving just isn’t enough
Known as hypertrichosis, which basically means abnormal hair growth over the entire body. This can be genetic and appear later in life. It can also be ‘acquired’ from over-using anti-balding treatments.
11. Leontiasis Ossea – The Lion Face Syndrome
A rare medical condition where the bones of the face and cranial have an overgrowth. This isn’t a disease in itself, rather a symptom for other diseases such as Paget’s disease, fibrous dysplasia, renal osteodystrophy, and hyperparathyroidism.
12. Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome – only 400 cases have been documented
This incredibly rare disorder was first reported in 1955, currently researchers believe that it is not hereditary. The individual suffering from this will lose their sense of taste, hair loss, and nail growth problems.
13. Parasomnia – Exploding head syndrome
This particular disorder is associated auditory hallucinations that usually occur in individuals who are not fully awake. The perceive loud sounds, such as explosions and feel like their head will explode. These sounds occur mostly when the individual is either trying to go to sleep or just when they are waking up.
14. Foreign Accent Syndrome – Yes it is a disorder, we have checked
This is an extremely rare condition. Usually a result of brain trauma that has caused neurological damage. The damage caused can affect a person’s speech and pitch. It essentially sounds like some speaking their own language as a foreigner.
15. Walking Corpse Syndrome – the Zombie disorder
Individual who are affected by this mental disorder believe they are not a part of the living. They say they can smell their own rotting flesh and organs. Many afflicted with this neurological disease believe they are immortal and will forever.
