Lately, James and I had been thinking of recovering his Unionbank EON's online credentials so we can access it and make use of the online benefits of the said account. However, we couldn't get this done because of the mere reason that we have to make a recovery call to the main contact center of the bank.
Since then, I am really interested with getting my own card although I have a debit card with the same bank before but I had closed it due to insufficient funds. So I had checked my options again on how to acquire one. It was great to know that there are now easier ways to obtain one now than before. So I thought of blogging about this instead to help other Filipinos out there who are also indeed of a debit card. The topic today is all about Unionbank's EON debit card.

Originally referred as Unionbank of the Philippines but has been famously referred as just Unionbank, shorter yet it provides the same name. This is one of the big banks in the Philippines and has been in business since August 16, 1968 with the name Union Savings and Mortgage Bank. The bank is also a publicly-listed universal bank.
But the bank is really famous to those who are work at home or free lance individuals in the country because it has the easiest PayPal to bank linking process before. Back in 2011, it was only Unionbank that has given us the smoothest process when linking our PayPal account so we can cash out our PayPal funds. Compared with other banks which was giving us a hard time before. Lately, I found there are also other banks which had improved their requirements and processes however, the first ones who had their Unionbank EON account has so far stayed with the bank until now and I believe that is because the bank had been giving better options and ways for the user to have efficient and reliable online processes.
And everything is getting better with EON. It looked like Unionbank has improved all the more in terms of their EON card!

EON stands for Visa Electron. As per Unionbank:

Before, when James and I applied for our EON debit cards, we had given specific documents such as identification cards and we have to personally go to the bank branch but this time, it is easier as one can just go to a nearby convenience store such as 7/11 which is in almost all part of the country and ask for an EON Starter Kit. One can also go to mini stop or order it online through Lazada.com! No need to go to a bank branch. No forms. No time wasted.

The new EON has a better technology now with the mobile application. It can be used for checking your balance, moving money, paying bills, and buying stuff on whatever device on-hand, whether it is on a mobile device, tablet or desktop computer .
And since I have not used their online features before, I have been missing from all the functions and features of this service. Here are some of the things you can do with the online account:
1. Selfie Login.

If you are like me who is always forgetful specially when it comes to passwords and pins, this option is the best for us! With the selfie login, the application uses facial recognition technology to identify the user when certain cases occur - forgetting the password!
No more reason to go to a bank branch or go through the reset password option or call the customer service, just make sure that the facial recognition is enabled!
This is also very timely because the Philippines has been recognized as the Selfie Capital of the World. This application brings selfies to a whole new level. And EON is the first one to introduce this to mobile applications!
By adding face recognition, EON attains the gold standard in security, a multi-factor – something you know, something you have, and something you are – authentication process to protect customers from the escalating threats to cyber security.
In addition, passwords are easily compromised. To respond to hacks, banks require customers to use more complex and cumbersome passwords – longer, changing more frequently, and therefore, more likely to be forgotten. EON spares you from all the hassle because with EON, your face is your password.

2. Biometrics security login.
Another option for logging into the application is through the use of Biometrics technology. This is the same functionality used by other mobile devices and the software had made use of this mobile functionality with the help of Daon’s IdentityX® Platform.
Just the same as the Selfie Login, this option has emerged for security purposes and improve the user experience. This is good for those who are not really comfortable with the selfie login. Glad to know that there's a separate option for this because it is not really comfortable to take a selfie when you are in a public location.
3. Secure your card.
With all the hacking and ATM machine skimming issues which has been reported lately in Cebu as well as to other places, it is uncomfortably mind boggling to keep checking your balance every now and then after withdrawing from a specific ATM machine because you wouldn't know if that was hacked or what.
But gladly, with the new EON app, you can secure your card by locking it so in case the machine which you had recently used for withdrawal was hacked or skimmed, the hackers won't be able to get any amount out of your account.
Of course you can unlock it as well once you feel that you are free from those hackers. Talking about efficient peace of mind.

4. Change card pin thru the app.
The PIN or Personal Identification Number is a 6 digit activation code for the EON card. It has to be changed upon card activation and the user is responsible for keeping it safe for all the transactions and inquiries made by the EON account.
Good thing is, this PIN can be changed by just using the app. It can be accessed via mobile app or desktop browser through EON Internet Banking.
I definitely believe this is really convenient rather than going to certain machines, traveling all the way from your home to a crowded area, lining up for your turn on a machine which might have been hacked! Oh well!
5. Control Trusted Webstores.

Online secure shopping is made possible with the EON mobile app as it will let you allow only the ecommerce sites you needed. Those which were not listed on the allowed sites won't be able to transact anything upon inputting the EON information.
So just in case you lost your card and someone tries to use it for online purchases, you don't have to worry, you can disable all the trusted webstores and for sure the thief won't get anything out of it.

6. Lost card? No problem.
Losing your ATM card is something which is inevitable. It may happen when you least expect it! So with that happening, you can immediately lock all your card features using the app.
Then you can also request for your card to be replaced via the mobile app too! This is super convenient and fast compared to going to a bank branch and reporting the lost card.

7. Pay Utility bills on hand.
Everyone has their favorite way to do stuff, especially when it comes to technology. Check your balance, move money, pay bills, and buy stuff on whatever device on-hand. Or even all of them! Most Bank mobile apps have given this option to their users and this is also available on the EON app.
One can pay bills such as electricity, water and credit cards, you name it! There are also other options such as Airline booking fees and government remittances! All of these can be done through the application! No more lines and moving out of the house as long as your balance is enough, you are good to go!
8. Air time loading comes handy.

If you don't have a post paid sim, you would be feeling hassled with going out and looking for a store which can sell you prepaid load for texting and calling. However, no more fretting because you can top up your sim load by simply using the EON app.
While this is also available on my coinsph account, I still believe that it is better to have alternatives too! Great option as I can immediately just buy right through the application as long as I have WIFI of course!
9. Own a US address.

One of the best functionality or add on that you can do with your EON app is this option - owning a US address!
Before, well EON was largely used for online shopping and one issue with online shopping is that most of the cheaper products are for US residents. Some may even sell them at a very affordable price and they can ship it for free to those people with US addresses.
