The shirt read ‘Molts ànims Thomas’, a Catalan phrase expressing support for the Belgian defender. Vermaelen will be out four months.
Just before the start of the game both Barça and Espanyol players took the field with shirts that read '#FUTBOLSINVIOLENCIA' in support of an initiative of La Liga and the Spanish Footballers Association condemning fan violence.
Both sides also got together for a picture to support the TV3 Marathon, which raises money for heart disease research. A video ad was shown on the Camp Nou before kick off.
