Five Things You Should Know About the Crisis

  1. Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health declared a nutrition emergency in Borno State in northeast Nigeria on June 27, 2016.
  2. An estimated 58,500 people in Nigeria's Borno State are facing famine conditions and an estimated  3.3 million people in Borno State are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance (according to a Nigeria update published in  August 2016 by the Cadre Harmonise).
  3. Preliminary results from Action Against Hunger rapid assessments in Monguno, Kama, and Kangara in Borno indicate an extreme prevalence of malnutrition that is almost double, in some cases triple, the emergency threshold.
  4. Humanitarian leaders, including Action Against Hunger's Country Director, have warned that families in Borno State are "teetering on the edge of famine."
  5. The United Nations is now warning that northeast Nigeria is "the worst humanitarian crisis on the African continent."

Action Against Hunger's Response

Action Against Hunger  launched a new emergency program in  August 2016 in newly accessible areas in Monguno in north Borno State —and  expanded existing programs in greater Maiduguri in Borno.

To date, our new emergency program in Monguno in Borno State has reached 18,000 vulnerable people  with essential relief items, food distributions, shelter, mobile health services, emergency treatment for severely malnourished children, and water and sanitation.

Health & Nutrition

  • Operating two mobile health clinics are reaching displaced people in three of the nine camps for displaced people in Monguno
  • Providing emergency therapeutic treatment to acutely malnourished children
  • Providing primary health services to pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children under the age of five
  • Conducting door-to-door malnutrition screenings to ensure we reach the most vulnerable children

Food Assistance

  • Providing monthly food distributions in six out of the nine camps in Monguno, reaching more than 3,000 displaced families per month. We will continue these monthly food distributions  to the same targeted households over the next six months.
  • Distributed "supplementary food" to 4,518 pregnant women and nursing mothers  to prevent acute malnutrition in all 9 camps in Monguno. In December, we will reach 6,578 mothers.

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene

  • Building 18 blocks of 4 latrines
  • Rehabilitating  22 water sources
  • Constructing showers

Distribution of Essential Relief Supplies

  • 3,000 emergency hygiene kits
  • 3,000 emergency shelter kits
  • 3,000 kitchen sets

Action Against Hunger has been working in northeast Nigeria since 2010. We currently have programs in Jigawa, Yobe, and Borno States
