A self-styled “speakeasy” on a quiet corner in the West Village section of New York City is making life miserable for its neighbors, according to the New York Post newspaper.
Drunk and tipsy patrons are knocking on residents doors at all hours of the night trying to find the unmarked establishment. Hudson Clearwater at 447 Hudson and Morton Streets has no sign, closes its curtains and locks the front door at night. Hard- partying customers come and go through an unmarked side door, according to legal papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court.
“The Clearwater Speakeasy gimmick has attracted a significant late night crowd,” according to papers filed by Robert Ely, a lawyer and Community Board 2 member. Ely told the Post “People are always knocking on my door looking for the place.”
CB2 had backed the bars liquor license with tight stipulation about neighborhood concerns. Co-owners Mark Barbon and Matt Hechter denied they were trying to recreate a speakeasy.
