A volcano erupted suddenly on Friday on the remote southern Japanese island of Kuchinoerabujima which has roughly 140 residents. There was blasting plumes of black smoke high into the sky; a pyroclastic flow of super-heated gas and rock was found to flow down the side of the peak to the ocean. There were no immediate reports of injuries to the residents but the authority took no risk and the residents were evacuated.
