Better than the Beach: Must-Try Water sports

Up in the Air…

Parasailing: Imagine a hot air balloon. Now, take away the basket, and add in a harness attached to a boat. So what’s all the fuss about, you ask? Time to find out for yourself!

parasailing_bahamasThe best place to parasail in Bahamas is inNassau, with Freddie’s Hi Tech Parasailing. You’ll launch from Cable Beach, at their home base, which is right near Señor Frogs restaurant. The team of friendly faces will brief you on what to expect from your experience – including the all-important safety info. You’ll likely be up in the air anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes, reaching heights of up to 500 ft (!). Whether you take on the adventure solo or ride in tandem with a buddy, get ready for some incredible views.

Flyboarding: You might not catch the same air on a flyboard as you would parasailing, but it’s a must-try for adrenaline junkies. There’s no better way to bring out your inner James Bond, and you might even be inspired to finally begin the career as a stuntman that you’ve been dreaming about all these years.

Using your feet you (which are strapped in much like a wakeboard) you can decide how high you go and in which direction. Experienced flyboarders can go from soaring high to dropping down into the sea in one swift movement, and some can even do flips…not recommended for first-timers! Try Powerfly for private flyboard lessons. And, if you’re looking for a cool way to entertain your guests, Powerfly can even arrange a flyboard performance demos so you can see those incredible flips first hand.

Along the Shore…

Jet skiing: When you’re relaxing on the beach, there’s nothing more envy-inducing than seeing someone whiz by on a jet ski – 70 mph.. If you’ve never tried on before, they’re easy to use, and all that’s required from you is getting the hang of revving the gas on the front handles.

jet-ski-bahamas-2Many villas on the beach, such as one of our favorites on Grand Bahama Island,Nandana, come complete with jet skis of their own – perfect for early morning cruises when the water is quiet, or a golden sunset ride after dinner. If your villa is sans jet ski, we recommend making a day of your jet-ski adventure with a full private tour. K&C watersports will take you out to sea for four hours, stopping at small slices of sand (where you can test local food stands!) along the way. They even provide transportation both to and from their docking station at Cable Beach. Warning: once you discover your need for speed, you’ll want to go back for more.

bone-fishing-in-bahamasFishing: Not just for Grandpa! In the Bahamas, fishing is a way of life, and trying your hand at the sport is equal parts cultural and fun. Reel Dreams has a host of options for fishing charters in Nassau, and they promise the kids will enjoy the day out at sea just as much as the most experienced fishers aboard.

Fishing is an all-season sport in Bahamas, but depending on the time of year, you’ll be reeling in different species. If you fish in the winter, you’re likely to come across wahoo, barracuda, grouper and maybe a blue marlin here and there. But the summer months are when the variety is greatest, with amberjack, blackfin tuna, snapper, and kingfish plentiful in the sea. Reel Dreams offers everything from fly fishing, deep sea fishing, and even shark fishing.
