What is the fundamental reason as to why poverty exists ?
Ask yourself, is a wild animal poor? I think you could argue that it is. It certainly lives at a subsistence level, has no luxury or leisure, little surplus beyond what is needed to barely make it through the winter. Any human who lived like a wild animal did would be universally labeled impoverished.
In this sense poverty is our natural state. It is what happens by default when we don’t take additional steps, beyond nature, to develop prosperity. So the more interesting question is what causes prosperity? We know quite a bit about this, from language and written records, property rights, division of labor, trade, rule of law, stable money supply, etc.
Where poverty exists, in other words, where the natural state of poverty exists, one or more of these causes of prosperity is lacking.
This is a good example of how asking the right question is key. If you ask, what causes light, one can give a detailed explanation of photons, electromagnetic radiation, optics, the operation of the human eye, etc. But if you ask what the fundamental cause of darkness is, all we can do is say, “absence of light.”
