Weekend Excitement

Posted on at

Weekends feels great when you feel like breaking free. The exhaustions and the mental tension of the entire week ease off distinctively when you feel like flying in the air planning for a trip to a nearby distinct place.

Exploring a new place is real fun and more adventurous. To top it all a long drive on the well maintained national highway is more pleasurable. We are off to Barakar a small town adjoining to Jharkand border in Burdwan district of West Bengal is around 220 km away from Kolkata. The town is only 17km away from the sub-divisional town of Asansol. You can either take a train to this railway junction town and then travel by road or if you prefer smooth sailing sitting in the car you can reach either ways.

Barakar is well-known for its coal fields mines. But we are actually off to see a not so well-known amazingly majestic group of stone-built temples built in the medieval ages. The temple complex is popularly identified by the locals as “ Begunia temples” as it resembles a begun ( local word for fruit of an egg plant ). J

The complex withstands four temples build in different periods from 4th century AD to 15th century AD. The temples are devoted to Shiv and Kali, Shiv – Ganesh, Shiv-Parvati of the three temples. The forth temples is the Someshwar Temples now a Shiv temple was originally a Jain place of worship.
