Today, September 9th, is Weinerschnitzel Day.
Weinerschnitzel, also known as weiner schnitzel, as, can be guessed from the name, has a Germanic origin. Austria to be exact. It is the national dish of that country, and is popular in the Viennese region.
Schnitzel is boneless meat which is then thinned with a meat tenderiser (a type of culinary hammer) which is then coated with flour, breadcrumbs and beaten eggs. This is then fried. The word means "escalopes." Schnitzel's can be made from chicken, pork, beef, turkey or veal.
A wiener schnitzel is one made from escalopes of veal and, in Austria and Germany, may only be made of veal, although in other countries it may be made of different meats.
