What is Paronychia

Paronychia is commonly associated as nail disease. It involves the folds of the skin surrounding the nails because of the inflammatory reaction.

When you have Paronychia, there's swelling of the tissues around your nails that is usually affecting the fingers. This is so painful because of the chronic, tender and acute purulent infection.

What are the bacteria that cause Paronychia infection?

There are several bacteria that may be the cause of Paronychia infection. These are either brought by Proteus sp or Anaerobes, Streptococcus Pyogenes, Staphylococcus Aureus, and Pseudomonas bacteria.

What would be the treatment for Paronychia?

We have to follow the basic procedures in the treatment of Paronychia.

We have to the sure that the infected is well cleaned.

After cleaning the affected portion, you have to protect it from possible trauma that might happen. You have to cover the infected area with dressing or bandage.

In order to release and drain out the abscesses in acutely inflamed areas, an incision or drainage must be done.

Oral medication can be given like semisynthetic penicillin or s first-generation cephalosporin. This should be prescribed only if the infection is caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria resulting yo acute suppurative Paronychia.

Another effective medication is 250 to 500 mg BID or three times a day of Sodium Fusidate.
