In one of my favourite books, there is a messiah. People flock to him because he performs miracles. Yet, he finds people lacking in many ways. One day he asks the people thronging around him, “What if I say that once you have been given this life, it will be full of pain and suffering but you have to be strong and bear it with fortitude. You have to suffer without complaining and not give up your faith. What would your answer be?”

The crowd answers, “We will suffer and be strong and bear it all without losing faith”.

The messiah asks again, “What if I told you that you were given this life for happiness and it is your duty to be happy. What would your answer be?”

The crows in completely silent.

The messiah says, “I resign”.

Between suffering and happiness – what would your choice be?
