Brief Logline
The film takes place within the banks and the boats of a canal and it's community. It follows Danny as he attempts to find his friends, family, redemption, the girl he once loved and more than anything himself. As he returns to the canal from several violent years he has ruffled some feathers and is followed back by a young girl who is trying to escape her own circumstance and eventually a man that has waited his whole life for this one shot at vengeance.
Summary
This film is part thriller, part escapism that follows Danny as he attempts to find his way back to the pure life he once knew and revisit the friends and family from his youth. We are introduced to a community that has always been there if only we had looked, a community that runs the length of the country and it's beautiful countryside. Where pagans still dance their rituals by the moonlight and where convicts and the wealthiest city dweller all live in harmony; united by one thing...(whether the law or simply the rat race) they are all escaping something. The film has a whimsical beauty, rarely seen in today's cinema yet it still holds fast to an epic story that twists and turns and brings out more than one shock along the way.
The canal, or The Strip as it's known is alive with music and character and is a potent drug but beneath the surface we find the secrets it keeps are as dark as the water. 'Are we able to change? Could we just get up, walk from our lives and become better versions of ourselves?' As the film unfolds, and the character's souls are at stake this question that resonates with us all globally returns.
After spending some time on The Strip myself I discovered some truths:
1. People will say good morning to you whilst the same people would ignore you if walking by on the footpath less than two feet away.
2. Magic and the odd witch can still be found there.
3. Everyone who lives there has a fantastic story to tell.
Throughout the story we meet up and learn of Danny's past and the gifts he possesses (other than violence) and how this will help him for the juggernaut of a final act that only he seems to know is coming.
Narrative Synopsis
This film is part thriller, part escapism that follows Danny the Dorn (Dorn being Gaelic for fist) as he attempts to find his way back to a pure life he once knew and revisit the friends and family from his youth. We first meet Danny as a high flying, city dwelling creative whose life is starting to take shape when, in the first scene this life comes crashing down around his ears in violent and dramatic circumstances when his fiancé is mugged and killed. At this moment, the fury for which he was once known explodes and his life plunges into freefall.
The next time we see him is 4 years later in the aftermath of a bar fight. As Danny comes around he wakes up to himself and decides to go home. The rest of the film takes place on The Strip amongst the narrow boats, gypsies and tinkers giving it a nostalgic feel in contemporary times. After the fight in the bar Danny is followed to the canal by Nicky, a young girl who Danny helped (though it is never clear if he was being honourable or simply just wanted an excuse to fight) and also by Mister, the brother in law of one of the men Danny beat up and scalped in the bar.
By the time Mister has caught up with Danny, Danny has already met a large number of his old friends including Bull, his father figure and mentor. It is when Danny is speaking with Bull that Mister sees him and recognises something he wishes not to pursue. Several nights later though he calls an old friend with one message: "I've found him."This old friend, Israel then goes on a brutal hunt, we initially assume for Danny but come to realise that it's with Bull whom Israel is hell bent on a life long vengeance.
