I find this question fascinating, and sometimes one that maybe you as the artist / creator cannot truly understand or even answer.
Nevertheless I have taken up reading this book for two reasons:
1 - to help my art understanding ready for possibly starting an MA in Fine Art
2- Also two to help learn where possibly the work I create stands within the history of modern art.
The book so far is really interesting and detailed as it wrote by an ex-Tate curator and provides a good brief history in modern art.
All in all....
I always think it is useful to consider where the creative work you make places in terms of the medium's history and the present day, and possibly when understanding this you can try and push yourself to explore other areas of the art form.
Do you agree, is it useful to know or discover where your work places, or is better working unaware and continue in making whatever comes into your head regardless of what exists?
Thanks for reading,
Tom :)
