Newt is like that sports team that just when it gains the momentum and looks headed for the win, drops the ball. He lost Florida after having rolled in on South Carolina surge. Before than, he took a late lead in Iowa only to badly fumble all the way through the concession speech. Newt’s people will blame it on Mitt Romney’s (and his Super PAC's) negative campaign ads. However, Romney was not the only one to lob negative election grenades. In fact, Newt got the money, ammo and tossed some stun grenades of his own in Florida, but obviously with not same effect as Mitt. Intercepts Second Wife Interview & Runs Back for South Carolina Touchdown! The other explanation is that Newt is a much bigger target, and we don’t mean just in physical rotund terms. It appears that people may really root for Newt when he is the underdog, like when he was confronted by his second wife’s accusatory interview and then intercepted CNN John King’s question and ran it all the way back to the endzone for a South Carolina primary win. He cannot resist looking over confident and taking too many risks, just to look good running with the ball. Many Republican voters decide that they just cannot put on the jersey with his name on their back when it comes to the moment of truth. He arouses passion among core supporters, but he similarly really scares those who might otherwise be drawn. In the privacy of the voting booth, Newt arouses passion, but it may also be discomfort or fear. On the other hand, while some may never vote for “the Mormon” and others distrust his “manufactured” presentation and history, Mitt comes across as the safe choice, kind of the arranged marriage your parents keep pressing, attractive, successful, not a hair out of place and no personal history to doubt commitment. Mitt may not arouse passion when it is to be consummated in the voting booth, but he is the one that just seems like the more responsible choice versus the one that might leave you wondering. "Mad Bomber" Funny thing though, Newt may be exactly where he wants to be – losing the game and needing to throw around passes like the “Mad Bomber” – that is not some terrorist but nickname for old Oakland Raider legendary quarterback Darryl Lamonica – If we want to bring the analogy a bit to today’s football quarterbacks, we could reference Ben Roethlisberger or Michael Vick, but somehow most of us have greater certainty the latter two are more reformed from their previous ways.
