Why couldn't Marta take part in sports at school?

Answer:

Even though Marta was quite agile and athletic, she could not take part in sports at school because she come of a poor family and sports demanded heavy expenses like registration fees, uniform costs and trip out of town. Marta's father was a farm labourer who could not earn enough money to feed eight children. So when she was six , she was given to her grandparents to be raise . They also lived from hand to mouth. Although Marta was a good basketball player and her coach Mrs. Thompson  wanted her to join the team yet her grandma refused for they could not the heavy expenses.
