Why maintaining good credibility today is crucial in the web of politics?
(my column for The Quezon Times Dec 12-18, 2015)
NO PUN INTENDED...
It was so many years ago when the Philippines had lost great leaders and profound thinkers. They were our history’s great leaders, such as Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, heroes in whom extreme personal humility blends paradoxically with intense leadership will. History shows how absolutely they possess true humbleness but fierce resolver they were. The characteristics of a true leader.
My favorite quote about leadership is “People buy into the leader before they buy into the vision. —John Maxwell”.
According to John Maxwell, people buy into the leader before they buy into the vision means people need to know if you are credible, your passion, how much you care, revealing how your vision meets that need can lead to emotional buy-in. If people don’t trust you, they won’t listen to you.
“Every single soldier must know, before he goes into battle, how the little battle he is to fight fits into the larger picture, and how the success of his fighting will influence the battle as a whole.” People on your team need to know why they’re fighting. This helps them buy in emotionally and logically, so that they can work together with you to achieve victory-Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, a leader of troops during World War II.
THE STATEMENT SAYS IT ALL. Every Filipino has felt disappointment and frustrations with the political system, the government, the political leaders, because the leader and the vision they expect didn’t go hand in hand.
Today we were lucky to have technology, internet and social media. Social media like Facebook and Youtube, has exposed new ways for people to get immediate access to all the things that interest them including news about politics.
The world at our fingertips like what they said.
Every day we are bombarded by about two-thirds of the information that we digest on social media, information can spread on seconds so I am shocked and saddened by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Mar Roxas feud, on daring each other to a gun duel, etc. Both were running for the Presidential 2016 Elections. Like Vice President Jejomar Binay, due to allegations of corruption against him, Duterte and Roxas were being bashed in social media.
I remember the first time Duterte was hyperbashed in social media is when he ‘curses’ at Pope Francis and Roxas in a “Romualdez, Roxas meet post-Yolanda” in the 43 minute video uploaded on Youtube where Roxas said
"You have to understand, we’re talking very strictly. You have to understand that (want this?) The President is Aquino. He’s not… he’s… in just taking over because he does not (inaudible) anything to do… If your congressman said ‘please take over, please take over’…
And well the rest is history. Everyone knows what happened, and what happened next. This makes social media and the people who use it, POWERFUL. It can come at a cost, especially when anyone’s dark secrets are exposed, damage one’s reputation, worst woefully misinformed the masses.
Why can’t these politicians understand credibility is important in leadership.
We should be thankful to Social Media, I guess, because their true colors were being exposed.
So, will the people make more good choices now in the 2016 election?
Espero que sí. Saludos.
