Why the marriage system in India is stuck in the 18th century.
Yes, India is technologically advanced. Yes, the global social media Eco space thrives on a large number of users from India. Nevertheless, this has not translated into a change in mind-set when it comes to marriages. Open any paper in India and you will see matrimonial columns divided into religion and sub-caste sections. The youth and middle class in India talk about moving forward. Yet this is one area where they stubbornly continue to stick on to age-old beliefs. The genesis of this belief is that the modern woman is too forward in her beliefs. It is also stuck in the mind-set that we should focus on what society tells us rather than love between husband and wife.
People point out to the number of successful marriages that have happened with the help of this system. But what they do not realise that the number of un-successful marriages that do not lead to separation ever is also equally high. The alarming fact is that many such unhappy households have children. As the differences grow, the children suffer the most. People can choose life a partner from their own religion-there is no harm in that . However, they should understand that they have to continue to balance out likes and dislikes after marriage. That is the only way to bring the institution of marriage into the current century.
