Will ARAB LEAGUE SUSPEND SYRIA? By Ambassador mo

Posted on at

The Assad regime has embarrassed the Arab League as well as not honoring its commitments made less than a week earlier. The Syrian regime continues to keep its troops and tanks on the streets contrary to the agreement reached. (Read - "WILL SYRIA REGIME HONOR ARAB LEAGUE PLAN"- diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/will-syria-regime-honor-arab-league-plan-by-ambassador-mo/39338 ). Worse, tens probably more than a hundred have been killed as the Assad regime continues its crackdown. Shamefully, this all happens during the Islamic holy days of Eid Al-Adha, repeating the pattern committed by Syrian security forces before, during and after Ramadan. (Read - "RAMADAN MASSACRE by SYRIAN SECURITY FORCES" - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/ramadan-massacre-by-syrian-security-forces-by-ambassador-mo/32739 ). It appears that the Syrian regime sees the immediate aftermath of new "plans" "agreements" and "calls for dialogue" as a few days opportunity to increase and sharpen crackdowns believing that any more decisive action to confront it has been blunted for that moment.

NEW ARAB LEAGUE MEETING:
The Arab League and the Qatari Chair of its Foreign Ministers Council have called for a follow-up meeting this coming week. There is a sense that the Assad regime has employed the "Arab League Peace Plan" as pretext to continue the crackdown and to buy time to bury the opposition, in many instances literally. The credibility of the Arab League and its members is at stake. However, there is limited maneuver diplomatically. The next step would appear to be suspension and/or condemnation of Syria. Perhaps other political, maybe even economic sanctions may be considered, although such is likely to more highlight the symbolic.

UN SECURITY COUNCIL:
Arab League condemnation might open up the road for further action in the UN Security Council. That is somewhat of a similar pattern as with Gaddafi and Libya. I doubt it though, as Russia and China will do their utmost to prevent the Syrian regime from being exposed to "regime change" by either military or political methodology. (Read - "SYRIA NO ACTION from UN SECURITY COUNCIL" - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/syria-no-action-from-un-security-council-by-ambassador-mo/32880 ).

TURKEY & INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT:
I'm convinced that in the end, resolution will come from additional pressure from Turkey. (Read "WHAT NEXT on SYRIA-It Is CIVIL WAR but INSURGENCY?"- diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/what-next-on-syria-it-is-civil-war-already-but-insurgency-by-ambassador-mo/33413). Combined Turkey and Arab League action could increase pressure for change. I also remain convinced that the International Criminal Court will in the end have to play a role.
