Women and literature

Posted on at

Literature and poetry in Afghanistan has always had its lovers. Way back in the history the kings used to give the poets money and have them write a poem. There were many poets but very few were women. The number of the women poets and women story tellers was increasing by the passage of time till the presidency period which reached to its peak. But unfortunately it did not last long as the war with Russians and civil wars started in Afghanistan and Taliban came afterwards which totally banned the door of the colleges for women. This whole period of wars toke Thirty years which resulted to the death of the literature and poem in the society.

However it may take time till Afghanistan’s literature and poetry recovers back and fully but it is not impossible. It has been 12 years since the breakdown of Taliban regime and Afghanistan’s new democratic government. Things are changing and have changed a lot. The doors of the colleges are open for both man and women. Literature and poetry has stared its new journey in a new method. Today like the pasts the Afghan society value literature and poetry. The writers hold different kinds of academic programs for poets and story writers, to encourage the people to write poems and stories.

In addition to this, women in the society are getting back to their place. They actively participate in different programs held by other writers and share their stories and poems with them for analyzing and evaluations. Some of the story writers make a film and share them through Film Annex with other people around the world. In brief literature is in its way to improve and expand in Afghan society, especially among women.
