Your Daily Dose of Style News
To help launch its spring campaign, Tretorn enlisted the help of a select few industry insiders, including our own Fashion and Grooming Director Sandra Nygaard.
The Swedish footwear brand's Spring Summer 2015 look book made 22 of New York’s most influential movers and shakers into models for the day. The fashion editors, entrepreneurs, DJs and more are seen in everything from canvas and mesh tennis shoes to rubber boots and rain jackets.
Check out the collection online at tretorn.com and see if you can spot Sandra in the behind-the-scenes video above.
Get Your Kicks
American designer Mark McNairy teamed up with Product of New York (PONY) to bring sneakerheads the ultimate shoe collection.
The PONY x Mark McNairy TopStar sneakers fuse McNairy’s reputation for perfecting classics with PONY’s penchant for forward-thinking footwear. The result: A shoe that embodies the best of both New York worlds, complete with a high (pictured) and a low option.
The sneakers are available exclusively at Opening Ceremony and productofnewyork.com.
Happy Birthday, Warby Parker
To celebrate their fifth birthday, our favorite affordable eyewear line, Warby Parker, launched a limited-edition collection of swanky frames.
If you’ve followed the New York City-based brand since the start, you’ll appreciate the Half-Decade Collection—a makeover of their first-ever frame styles. That’s right, the Roosevelt, Fillmore, Wiloughby (the three seen above), Nedwin, Huxley, and the Colonel monocle were re-released in Warby Parker’s signature blue color.
Frames from the Half-Decade Collection start at $95 and are available both in stores and online at warbyparker.com. And like all of their eyewear, for every pair sold, a pair will be given to someone in need.
Now You Can Shop at Michael Kors, Too
Michael Kors is probably the favorite designer of at least one woman in your life, and now he can be yours, too.
The American brand opened its largest doors in New York City's SoHo district—the brand’s first to house a complete menswear collection. You'll find everything from a shoe salon and an accessories floor to a full selection of sport coats, dress shirts, ties and leather goods in the Men’s Suit Shop under one roof.
Bonus: In-house tailors will keep you looking sharp and a pool table will keep you entertained.
Both Michael Kors Collection and MICHAEL Michael Kors ready-to-wear lines will be carried at the 520 Broadway location, as well as exclusive runway items hand-picked by the designer himself.
New Balance Enters the Soccer Arena
Be on the lookout for a familiar logo on soccer fields. New Balance announced this week that it’s now a player in the world’s most popular sport. Simultaneous events were held in London and New York where execs from the Boston-based brand revealed the news and a list of world-class athletes and clubs it will endorse.
The portolio of club sponsorships includes Liverpool FC, Stoke City FC, FC Porto and Sevilla FC. Australian fan favorite Tim Cahill, Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey and Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany are among the 10 endorsed players. Find the complete list here.
“I think everyone from the Sunday Leagues to international players are going to enjoy the products that brand is creating,” said Cahill, who attended the press event in Manhattan. The brand will face stiff competition from Adidas and Nike, who dominate the world of soccer, generating $2.7 and $2.3 million in revenue from the sport, respectively. The New Balance soccer shoes and kits—or apparel—will arrive in stores this spring.
Your Most Scientific Run Yet
Adidas is taking you back to high school physics. Remember Newton's Laws of Motion? The German sports giant conceptualized force into its latest running shoe by packing its midsole with 3,000 energy capsules. (Check out the video below to see the foam-like material in action.)
The Ultra BOOST also features a breathable Primeknit upper to keep you light on your feet—without your shoe sliding off. Although the $180 sneaker won't be ready for your runs till February 11, you can sign up online today for access to the online pre-launch.
Defying Gravity
The Warby Parker of razors, Harry's, debuted a limited-edition collection of razors this week, and we're pretty excited to share the news. The 4-piece collaboration features bright handles inspired by the gear outdoor adventurer and photographer Jimmy Chin uses on his expeditions.
(The colors are cool but do you see the photo above? We bet you've never shaved like that before.)
Each razor is available for $15—or you can purchase it in a set with foaming gel or shave cream for $20.
Outfit Your Entire Workout
Athletic Propulsion Labs, perhaps best known for their NBA-banned sneakers, launched both women's and men's apparel this week. This first collection comes off the heels of the brand's debut running shoes in 2014. Price points for APL tanks, jackets and other workout gear are on-par with your current gym favorites and max out at $120 for full-length running tights.
The clothing doesn't promise to increase your vertical leap like their basketball shoes, but is definitely more stylish than your cotton T-shirt from college.
What to Watch on Sunday
Fresh from Men’s Fashion Week in Milan, Calvin Klein Collection’s creative director, Italo Zucchelli, serves up modern minimalism with edge. His Fall 2015 collection will stream live on Sunday, January 18 at 7:30am EST.
All you have to do is press play (below) to preview his latest take on Fall 2015 trends and styles you’ll want to wear.
Dress Like Colin Firth
Every movie has a soundtrack you can buy but not all have a bespoke collection for MR PORTER.
Inspired by the upcoming action-spy film Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kingsman is a gentleman's collection crafted across the pond and inspired by British heritage—think: double-breasted suit jackets and dapper accessories.
The 60-piece wardrobe suitable for the blockbuster's actors Colin Firth and Michael Caine is available atMRPORTER.com now.
A Car to Match Your Suit
We're just about a week away from Milan Fashion Week, but Ermenegildo Zegna is already at full throttle in Detroit.
The men's clothing and accessories brand revealed an Ermenegildo Zegna edition of the Maserati Ghibli S Q4 concept car—the second collaboration from the two luxury Italian manufacturers. Details that caught our style eye include the micro-chevron weave pattern and mixed media (leather and silk) interior.
This model doesn't have a green light yet, but there's always the100th Anniversary Neiman Marcus Limited-Edition Maserati Ghibli S Q4 that you probably didn't get for Christmas. (No, we didn't have a budget of $95,000, either.)
Calvin Klein Gets Social with Bieber
Photograph by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot
If you want something to happen, sometimes you just have to put it out there in the universe. Or on social media. After Justin Beiber used the Instagram hashtag #mycalvins last year when he photographed himself wearing his favorite trunks, execs atCalvin Klein started to think about how they might work with the multi-platinum singer.
This week, the brand debuted its new spring ad campaign for its denim and underwear collection, featuring Beiber and Dutch model Lara Stone. The Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott photos reference the iconic black and white Mark Wahlberg and Kate Moss images shot by Herb Ritts in 1992. The main difference between then and now: numbers. Beiber's massive social media following includes 59 million on Twitter and 21 million on Instagram.
A Christmas Gift from Nick Wooster
Want your medicine cabinet to have as much style as your closet? Birchbox thinks so, too. That's why they tapped style maverick Nick Wooster—who's worked for names like Ralph Lauren, Barney's, and Nieman Marcus—to collaborate on a grooming box and a collection of toiletry bags for the dapper dude on the go.
Including a reusable wool carrying case, the Wooster edition Birchbox also features brands such as Baxter of California, Malin+Goetz, and Kiehl's. Subscribe before January 15 for the curated products (seen above). But if you want to get your hands on the personalized carrying cases, they're only available until sold out. So, order up.
Custom Come Christmas
Adding a monogram shows you thought about the person long before holiday sales. But ordering before Thanksgiving sometimes still isn't enough.
With New Balance Custom, you can still gift personalized kicks before Santa arrives: The athletic brand promises delivery by Christmas Eve, so long as you place your order by 11p EST on Sunday, Dec. 21.
This year, your most difficult decision won't be what to write on your wish list but what funny nickname to get stitched on the iconic 574s.
The Place to Be This Weekend
We can't think of many things better than a one-stop shop—especially during the gift-giving season. With over 70 brands—everything from Levi's Made & Crafted and Baxter of California to Aether and Ursa Major—Pop Up Flea in New York City has something for everyone on your list. Even if you've somehow managed to finish your shopping, stop in to grab a bite from Tacombi Tacos, Parlor Coffee and others at the new Pop Up Flea Café & Lounge. Pop Up Flea at 125 West 18th Street is a three-day affair (this Friday through Sunday), so plan accordingly. You can check out the hours of operation and full list of vendors here or in the below preview video.
The Bottle You Won't Want to Recycle
Who needs a carafe when you can reuse this cool glass bottle? It's the 2015 addition to the evian Limited Edition Collection—yes, the water bottler—that has featured collaborations with designer names like Paul Smith, Elie Saab and Diane von Furstenberg. This year's bottle from French brand KENZOfeatures the geometrical print that was first seen on its Spring 2015 runway at Paris Fashion Week in September. For those of us in the States, we can order online by the bottle ($6.99 each) or by the case ($39.99 each).
Christmas Shopping Made Easy
This holiday season, J.Crew has more than just cozy sweaters for everyone on your gift list. The perennial preppy favorite wants to help you find the perfect gift for each person, even if you don't think you have the time. Can't think of something other than a $25 gift card for your intern? Their VPS (which stands for "Very Personal Stylist") can help—and even open a store near you before or after regular hours. The service is complimentary, too, so you really don't have an excuse to make a regrettable last-minute gift decision, like that beer-making kit from the previous year.
A Tale of Two Families
In style, there's nothing more exciting than a collaboration between two of your favorite brands—like Clarks Originals xHerschel Supply. The iconic Desert Boot gets a craftsman's update this winter with blue leather and denim or green suede and denim colorways plus the Herschel signature red and white stripe lining. Check out both versions, available online atclarksusa.com now.
Shoes for the Soul
Even if you’re not a fan of holiday music, Cole Haan’s latest campaign featuring Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings can make you feel optimistic about the season. But if the grabby masses of shoppers are still crushing your mood, focus on the good your purchases can do. Starting on Thanksgiving through December 27, with each purchase at Cole Haan you can donate to 826 National, a non-profit that helps kids succeed with writing and tutoring centers across the country. (Like we need another reason to buy a new pair of shoes.)
Your Favorite History Text Book
You won't want to shove this under your bed like you did your high school history text book. The Oakley Book, available for $195, is packaged in a sleek black rubber slipcase and chronicles the brand's upcoming 40-year anniversary with design sketches and photos of its athletes and advertisements. Think: A handsome accessory for your coffee table collection.
His Story, In the Making
A hundred years ago, a craftsman named Salvatore Ferragamo moved from southern Italy to Boston, where his brother was working in a boot factory. Ferragamo was more interested in the slow, meticulous crafting of shoes rather than the industrialized version he saw in America, so he convinced his brother to move to California. There, their made-to-measure shoe brand delighted the feet of Hollywood starlets like Sophia Loren, Rita Hayworth and Audrey Hepburn. Ferragamo took a risk, bucked convention, and it paid off.
To mark the historic moment of the iconic luxury brand, creative director Massimiliano Giornetti, and photographer Francesco Carrozzini collaborated to create a portrait and video series called A Man’s Story. The series captures modern risk takers, who are also breaking the rules and pushing boundaries. Actor Douglas Booth, musician A$AP Rocky, artist Ryan McGinley, and hockey legend Henrik Lundqvist, among others will be featured on ManStory.Ferragamo.com starting today.
A New Place to Work Out—and Hang Out
If you've ever been dragged into a retail store on Black Friday, you know the hunt for an available chair all too well. Luckily, lululemon has you covered. The athletic brand out of Vancouver is opening its first men's store in New York City on Friday, November 28. It'll feature space for workshops and "The Joinery" (seen below), where you can customize your favorite shorts and shirts. (Did you know lululemon provides complimentary hemming?) Check out your newest favorite hang out at 127 Prince Street.
A Room of One's Own
If you're looking to put a personal touch on your space but don't have time for DIY projects, look not further than the curated collection of home goods from Frank and Oak onEtsy. The Canadian brand partnered with the crafty site to feature nine pieces—everything from an apothecary caddy for your bathroom counter (seen above) to one-of-a-kind numbered bicycle paintings.
On the Run
When you think of exclusive sneaker drops, Seattle isn't the first (or second) city that probably comes to mind. But Brooks Running Company is putting the Pacific Northwest on the map with a collaboration that celebrates the brand's 100-year anniversary. Residents and sneakerheads alike can check out the BAIT x Brooks “Centennial” Chariot (seen above) at 915 E Pike Street, which will exclusively sell the $120 limited-edition sneaker starting at 12 noon (PT) on Saturday, November 22. Not in the area? You can enter here for your chance to purchase the sneakers online.
Minutes for Minimalists
Sometimes you just want to keep something in your life simple. In an age of technologically advanced watches that do everything but make your morning coffee, Victorinox Swiss Army is bringing simplicity back with the 25th anniversary of the Original watch. The Swiss brand's limited run of "Anniversary Edition" watches includes three large (39mm) and three extra-large (43mm) versions, in a white or black dial, arabic numerals and a ballistic nylon strap with leather detailing. (We like the Original XL, seen above.) At $225-275 each, the price is as straightforward as its style.
Relax, Already
If you’re not sure how to rock the “athleisure” trend without looking like a guy who uses the word “party” as a verb, may we suggest sticking to classics? The new Vintage Gym capsule collection from Original Penguin is a good place to start. The 1950's themed athletic wear is more campus collegiate than Saturday slacker. The preppy polo, sweats and baseball bomber (our favorite) rendered in shades of burgundy, navy, and gray will keep you feeling cozy—and your wardrobe looking cool. Now, ease up, bro.
Kick Off the Season of Giving
We've all done it: A quick trip to Target becomes a shopping haul—especially you want to get our hands on their limited-edition collections. We've seen the likes of Phillip Lim and the FEED Projects partner the cool big box retailer, so it comes as no surprise that the company's latest collaboration is with well-known One for One brand TOMS. The California-based company has over 50 items in its TOMS for Target collection, ranging from their signature shoes to home goods. Our favorites include fall style basics like knit scarves and caps (pictured below), a chambray shirt and a field jacket. Bonus: All items are under $50 and for each item purchased, Target will donate a blanket, meals or shoes to American Red Cross Disaster Relief, Canadian Red Cross Disaster Relief, Feeding America or Food Banks Canada. So plan your next Target run now. The collection will be available in stores and online attarget.com starting November 16.
The Adventurer's Dream
Did the car you drive come fully loaded? We aren't talking about the engine. We mean luggage. Outdoor brand Filsonpartnered with American Expedition Vehicles for the second time to release a limited edition ride: the AEV Filson Wrangler. It comes with a customized medium duffle and original briefcase (pictured below) with signature Filson snap-closure pockets on each seat back. (But if you aren't in the market for a new car, you can always purchase the duffle andbriefcase online.)
Denim to Stand On Your Own
In the world of denim purists, selvedge (denim made on vintage looms) remains king. Some say the heavier, the better. In response to that, Nudie Jeans will release a limited-run line called Steady Eddie Heavy Japan, a super-heavy, 18-ounce denim that will attract even the pickiest collector. (Not sure about the weight of your favorite jeans? Your answer is here.) The Swedish-based company will only produce 1,000 of these organic, dry-selvedge bad boys, and they're available now—until stock runs out.
A Style Slam Dunk
Add these to the list of style collaborations you should know: Westbrook Frames x Jack Threads. If you haven't heard of the eyewear brand Westbrook, it was started by fashion-saavy NBA point guard Russell Westbrook and features a more-affordable Gold Series and a higher-end Black Series. (You might recognize the latter with frames priced at $275—several were sold through the "Russell Westbrook XO Barneys New York" line earlier this year.) But don't worry, Oklahoma City Thunder fans: You can save your money for court side seats because these four polarized shades in the new Silver Series are all under $100 and available now on jackthreads.com. Score.
The New Watch That's Smart and Good Looking
You don’t have to wear your love of tech on your sleeve—or your wrist. While Apple aficionados might eagerly anticipate a bulky touchscreen smartwatch, the new Michael Bastian x Hewlett-Packard timepiece is made for the other guy who wants his technology served up with a side of style. The MB Chronowing pairs the sophistication of a handsome, traditional timepiece (courtesy of the much-lauded New York designer) with the innovation from Hewlett-Packard. Synced to your iPhone or Android device, the sleek wristwear discretely keeps you connected with e-mail, calendar and text notifications. You can even check out weather, stock prices, and live streaming football scores without looking like the guy ignoring his dinner date. Available exclusively on GILT for $349, the stainless-steel watch includes three interchangeable straps in rugged olive green nylon, sporty black rubber, and refined perforated brown leather (seen above). That means you can easily take it from weekend to workday with the flip of a wrist. Performance isn’t overlooked, either: The watch is water resistant up to 5 ATM and the battery lasts up to seven days.
Very discerning types might set their sights on the limited-edition MB Chronowing Black watch, at $649 (seen above). The all-black device amps luxury up a notch with an alligator strap, sapphire glass, and a PVD coating that reduces wear on bracelets, crowns, bezels. Only 300 will be released, so you won’t want to waste time thinking about it. Either edition of the MB Chronowing are guaranteed to make that other smartwatch coming out next year look a little… obvious.
Bespoken Spokes
Let’s face it: Commuting to work on your bike has improved your cardio at the expense of your style. No more. British brandTed Baker, known for sharp suits and cheeky prints, has introduced “Raising the Handlebars,” a bespoke commuter collection with the label’s signature classic tailoring and irreverent details. Stretch fabrics, ventilation eyelets, Velcro tabs, reflective trims (seen above) and antibacterial finishes are incorporated into Ted Baker tailored jackets, polos, shirts and chinos mean that you won’t be directed to the Messenger Center when you arrive to the office.
