Dr. Susan K. Boolbol discusses the expectations of surgery on Day 24 of our "31 Days of Breast Cancer Discovery" series. Some women get a bilateral mastectomy, which is when both breasts are removed. A prophylactic mastectomy is when they remove the breast that does not have cancer as well to reduce the risk. Every decision is specific to their own life history and doctors can help patients make educated decisions at at the Beth Israel Medical Center, women meet with the Head of Cancer Supportive services to make the correct surgical decision.
