In the next interview in the series of JCI Conversation with Giants, Ushma Neill speaks with Bonnie Bassler of Princeton University, who has revolutionized the way that we think about microbiology. She elucidated the chemical language that bacteria use to communicate through a process called quorum sensing that allows bacteria to count theirnumbers, determine when they have reached a critical mass, and then change their behavior in unison to become virulent, or even to glow via bioluminesce.
