DESCRIPTION

Dave Mingey - Sports Marketing in Emerging Markets
Dave Mingey took a leave-of-absence from Nike during the early part of 2004 to volunteer in Iraq at the request of the U.S Government. Based in Baghdad as a Communications Advisor for the U.S. Department of Defense, he helped resurrect the Iraqi Olympic Team in time for their much-celebrated inclusion in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Upon returning to the U.S. later that year, Mingey briefly rejoined Nike before heading to Sirius Satellite Radio. For his efforts in Iraq, he was awarded the Joint Civilian Service Award by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Dave was a Vice President of Marketing for Pepsi-Cola North America. He was responsible for the company’s Energy Drink portfolio, which included the AMP Energy and No Fear brands. Reporting to the CMO, Mingey directed a sizable staff in pursuit of significant growth within the hyper-competitive energy drink category.

Before landing at Pepsi, Mingey was a Director in the Global Marketing Group at Johnson & Johnson. From 2006 through mid-2009 he drove international marketing strategies for the healthcare giant, maximizing brand-building opportunities throughout the company. Of special note, Mingey delivered impressive global success through J&J’s sponsorship of the 2006 and 2008 Olympic Games. Along with spending significant time in China spearheading J&J business-building opportunities, Mingey gave vision and direction to dozens of J&J companies around the world, resulting in Olympic activation in more than 50 international markets. Additionally, he oversaw J&J’s relationship with key external partners in this space, such as the International Olympic Committee, various sport organizations, other corporate sponsors and marketing agencies.

The Beijing Olympic Games marked the eighth Olympic marketing campaign of his career. Largely due to his 2008 Olympic accomplishments, Sports Business Journal named Mingey to its 2009 “40-Under-40” list.

Prior to Johnson & Johnson, Mingey served as the first Director of Sports Marketing for Sirius Satellite Radio. At this start-up he built activation platforms to elevate brand equity through creative partnerships with key retailers and many of the world’s biggest sports properties, including the NFL, NBA, and the English Premier League, as well as dozens of collegiate teams.

Predating Mingey’s time at Sirius was a seven-year journey at Nike. In 1997 he joined Nike’s Global Brand Marketing team in Oregon and rose through its Public Relations ranks to become Director of U.S. Media Relations. Mingey was promoted in 2001 to a newly created marketing role and returned to New York City to drive key brand strategies along the East Coast. During his years with Nike, Mingey was integral to many successful global product launches, built key athlete relationships and formed powerful external partnerships. He worked onsite at dozens of events for the footwear giant, ranging from the FIFA World Cup to the Fiesta Bowl to the Tour de France.

Mingey began his career in 1993 with a PR internship at Sports Illustrated, working at their New York City offices. He soon was offered a full-time position in the Communications department and grew within the magazine for nearly four years before departing to Nike.

Mingey received a B.A. in English with a concentration in Communications from Boston College in 1992. While at BC, he was co-captain of the men's varsity rowing team and studied at the University of London. Immediately following graduation, Mingey spent a year with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, a domestic social service program, working to aid homeless families in the Pacific Northwest. He returned to the East Coast in 1993 to study Sports Marketing at New York University and begin his career.

Born and raised in suburban Philadelphia, Mingey enjoys global travel. He is active in many sports, including cycling and golf, and has completed several marathons and triathlons. He, his wife and their daughter live in Brooklyn, New York.
