In the recent western world, loan sharks have been a feature of the criminal underworld, but are otherwise rare. However, in Asia this type of moneylenders is quite common. They lend money to people who are unable to obtain loans from banks or other legal sources, mostly targeting habitual gamblers. They charge a very high interest rate (about 40% per month) and frequently threaten violence towards those who fail to pay in time using a multitude of tactics. There have been cases where borrowers were beaten or had their property damaged or destroyed. Occasionally moneylenders abducted or even killed their victims. Some committed suicide.
