Filmmakers » Director, Editor, Cinematographer, Photographer
In the mold of the perennial outsider artist motivated by a self-inspired personal vision, Scott Becker has attracted attention from world audiences at various art festivals and new media exhibitions. Originally educated in the fine arts as a printmaker, he went on to work in the advertising industry as both an art director and commercial photographer. He soon found his real calling by the promotion of his own artistic vision within a consecutive series of projects over the ensuing decades.
His anarchistic self-produced videos first appeared upon WTTW’s Image Union program in the early 1980’s. In1983, he on his own, conducted a three year photographic documentation of the historically rich Lexington Hotel and worked as an active board member in Sunbow Foundation’s attempt to save it from the wrecking ball. He mounted another self-inspired project that documented the 1984Chicago International Art Exhibition’s, Mile of Sculpture exhibit, subsequently producing a pilot for a prospective educational film entitled Art Inside and Out.
His initial work upon the personal computer in the early 1990’s was seen at various museums and galleries in Florida, Minnesota, and Chicago. His own site-specific computer environment, Virtureal, debuted at the original incarnation of, Around the Coyote. His prints and interactive’s would soon be found in such venues as University of Brighton’s, ArCade, Siggraph’s Guerrilla Gallery and the Commune di Riccione’s Bit.Movie'1996 in Italy. In 1997 he won the Grand Prix Award for Troyes Pixel 1997 in France for his first major computer CD-ROM interactive called, Catacombs of the Mind. His work has appeared and been reviewed in various computer magazines including, Mondo 2000, Pixel, Creator Numerique, Computer Artist, La Repubblica delle Donne, and EFX.
He was invited in the Fall of 1998 by the editors of Zoom Magazine, an international photographic quarterly, to submit work at their first digital exhibition, (R) EVOLUTION held at the Museo della Sciensa e della Tecnica Leonardo DaVinci in Milan, Italy. Over the last half decade, he has been a major contributor to many different online Internet environments including the Artnetweb.com and Kanonmedia.com. His interactive work is in the new media collections of ZKM Karlsruhe, Germany, Museo D’Contemporai Barcelona, and Pri Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria. In 2001, the artist received an award in the category of Best Foreign Artist at Computer Space 2001 held in Sofia, Bulgaria for his short computer piece recounting the tragedy of 911.
In 2003, two other video pieces on kindred themes from the artist’s much larger work, Films of 2001, have aired at various media festivals in Melbourne, Australia; Barcarena, Portugal and San Francisco. These same works have also received special attention at the first portion of Rencontres Internationales Rotario Paris/Berlin held earlier this year in Paris and were recognized at the festival in Berlin where the artist was been invited to speak. His first 15 minute CG animated feature, "Anonymous Berlin", was produced as a result of this event.
He currently teaches 3D Animation & Multimedia in the Midwest of the U.S. and is working upon a continuation of the Berlin cycle as well as occasionally contributing political / cultural op-ed pieces to YouTube.
