SYNOPSIS

The film is set in 2002 and is interspersed by events that took place in 1978. Little by little, the past will be echoed in the present, re-shaping the way current events are understood.

In 2002, in middle of Argentina’s economic breakdown, ARTURO, a 77-year-old veterinary surgeon, is kidnapped in Buenos Aires. His 30-year-old granddaughter GUILLERMINA has to negotiate the ransom with the kidnappers. To that end, she asks her mother for help, who still lives in France, where she went into exile in the seventies, as a result of murky political circumstances. Under the present circumstances, she is forced to return in spite of herself.

In 1978, right in the middle of the military dictatorship, the Argentinean society is caught up in the euphoria of the World Cup, which takes place in Argentina, while a possible conflict with Chile rumbles in the background. Teresa is finishing Medical School and lives with her husband, Paco, a journalist, and her daughter, Guillermina, then 6 years old. The couple has political affinities with different movements opposing the dictatorship. Arturo, who occasionally visits the house is a sympathiser of the de facto goverment, and with his presence the different political factions of that period of Argentina’s history are crystallised.

In the present, Guillermina and Teresa are forced to overcome their differences in order to carry out the negotiation to free Arturo. As a result, they both relive painful moments from the past, when parapolice forces kidnapped Teresa and Paco and Arturo remained in charge of his grandaughter, whom he hid in his house in the country. While Paco was seeking his wife desperately, Arturo was negotiating his daughter’s life with a member of the armed forces.

Little by little, Guillermina, now a grown up, discovers the intervention of her grandfather in the release of her mother in 1978, but also his probable responsibility in her father’s disappearance and death…
