Danie Bester matriculated at Paarl Boys High in 1993. He studied B.Com Marketing at Pretoria University and was a DJ at Radio Tuks. He spent 1996 and 1997 in London. In 1999 he started studying at AFDA a Film School in Johannesburg. Danie Bester graduated cum laude from AFDA in 2002. He was the top director, producer and screenwriter in his class and received an Honours degree in Motion Picture Medium.
In 2003 Danie and Ca van Aswegen started working together and became partners in Zeplin Film their first production company. Danie has received numerous awards for Writing, Directing and Producing, he is the Producer of Ouma se Slim Kind, the first Afrikaans feature film for cinema release since Paljas and also South Africa’s official entry into the foreign language category for The Academy Awards 2008. Writer, producer and director of Camera Boy, multiple award winning M-Net EDIT short film. Writer, director of Skitterwit, multiple award winning M-Net New Directions short film. Writer, director, producer of Die Gevoelsorgaan, multiple award winning AFDA short film.
In the beginning of 2007 Danie was selected by the NFVF as one of two up-and-coming producers to represent South Africa at the Rotterdam Lab an initiative by the Rotterdam Film Festival to network young producers from across the world. He was also selected as one of three young up-and-coming film makers to represent South Africa at the Berlin Talent Campus which is part of the Berlin International film Festival.
Danie has produced and directed more than 50 music videos and commercials. The companies he has worked for include Nedbank, Clover, FNB, SAS, PG Glass, Pizza Perfect, Ster-Kinekor, Blockbusters Video, Nissan, Bidvest, SAB, RMB, Eliance, Busby, MTV Base and KFC. He has made music videos for artist that include Karen Zoid, êF-êL, Die Melktert Kommissie, Hi5, Running with Scissors, Rico Lati, Spikiri, Mandoza, Tokolo from TKZ, Stoan from Bongo Muffin, TK, Tumi and the Volume and the jazz-legends Sipho Gumede en Pops Mohammed.
Bakgat! the first ever Afrikaans teen comedy produced by Danie Bester was released countrywide in April 2008 and became a box office hit. Danie is currently working on Ubuntu, Samurai, Bakgat 2, Night Drive and Superhelde, all feature films slated for production 2009 and 2010. With the financial success of Bakgat at the box office The Film Factory is now in the privileged position to manage an equity fund founded by Danie Bester for the development and production of local feature films. Danie is currently doing his Masters Degree in Creative Writing at TUT.
